Yoda, a 14-year-old female dog weighing approximately 2 pounds, was crowned as the 2011 World’s Ugliest Dog at the annual Sonoma-Marin Fair, Petaluma, California held on June 24, 2011.

Reports said that Yoda is a Chinese-crested Chihuahua mix with protruding tongue, short hair and long and almost hairless legs. Its owner, Terry Schumacher of Hanford, California, reportedly said that she first thought Yoda was a rat when she first saw it.

Schumacher‘s daughter reportedly found the dog in an apartment building 14 years ago. “When she brought her home, I thought she had a rat,” Schumacher was quoted as saying.

The contest in its 23rd year is being held yearly to raise awareness about rescue dogs and the dangers of inbreeding.

“We’re here because we wanted to show people that it’s important to adopt these kinds of dogs. Most people want a cute dog when they go to the shelter, so dogs like her are usually put to sleep,” Annie Ragsdale, owner of a Chinese-crested dog named Rue, reportedly said in an interview.

The winner received $1,000 and a trophy.
