Yao Ming of NBA’s Houston Rockets Retires

According to several international news reports, July 8, 2011, Yao Ming of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA’s) Houston Rockets decided to retire. The 30 year-old, 7 ft.  6 in. tallest basketball player has been unable to deliver in the last games of the Houston Rockets due to a left foot injury.

Reportedly Yao Ming has acted as a “bridge” between two cultures, that of the United States and China. Forbes also ranked him on top of its Chinese celebrities list as the most popular and the highest paid athlete.

He had several advertisement stints with Visa, McDonalds and Nike, to name a few. Yao Ming also participated in the Asian championships in which he led his Chinese team to 3 consecutive gold medals in 2001, 2003 and 2005.

Ming’s NBA basketball career has concluded with averages of 19 points, 1.9 blocks and 9 rebounds per game.
