Yahoo is being set to name its new CEO on Wednesday, January 04, 2012, and PayPal President Scott Thompson, who runs eBay‘s online payments unit, is a strong candidate for the said position.

According to a report at All Things D website on Tuesday, sources close to the situation said that Yahoo is expected to announce the name of its new CEO the next day.

As of this writing, Yahoo is being run by the board and by interim CEO Timothy Morse, the company’s former CFO, replacing former CEO Carol Bartz, who was fired on September 16, 2011.

As reported earlier, Ms. Bartz, who was named as Yahoo CEO on January 13, 2009, sent an email to the entire Yahoo staff titled ‘Goodbye’ that she was fired by the company via a phone call.

Last October, All Things D reported that Yahoo has hired Heidrick & Struggles to search for a new CEO, citing a source, in which Scott Thompson was not mentioned as among the candidates.
