Wyclef Jean Disqualified To Run As Haiti’s President

Wyclef Jean, the hip-hop singer who said that he will run for president of Haiti this coming November election has been disqualified by the board of elections in Haiti.

The commission rejected his application because he did not met the residency requirements to run. It is a requirement to have a five consecutive years of residency before the voting day to be able to run as president. Wyclef Jean did not met that requirement because he was born in Haiti but moved to the US when he was still a child and was raised there.

Wyclef Jean‘s statement as reported by the Wall Street Journal:

“It is with a heavy heart that I tell you today that the board of elections in Haiti has disqualified me from my run for the presidency of the country,” Wyclef Jean said in a statement late Friday night. “Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee’s final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same.”
