World’s smallest working dog, tiny Lucy, was recently named by Guinness World Record as the world’s shortest working dog, according to reports by several international news sites on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Lucy has taken the Guinness record from Momo, an eight-year-old chihuahua that works as a police search-and-rescue dog in Japan.

The smallest dog, a three-year-old tiny Yorkshire terrier from New Jersey, weighs 2.5 pounds and stands at 5.7-inch or 14.5 cm in height.

The tiny dog is owned by Sally Leone Montufar of Absecon, NJ. Lucy works as a therapy dog at the Cherry Hill-based Leashes of Love program. Reports say that Lucy regularly visit hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, and work with children with disabilities and troubled youth.

In a statement, Montufar said that Lucy “brings joy everywhere.” She adds that “she should go from being homeless to having a world record, it just shows you the potential that’s there if you take a chance.”
