McDonald’s is building the world’s largest McDonald’s restaurant for the upcoming 2012 Olympic games in London and as a result, a group of British doctors criticized its sponsorship, according to several news sites on May 1, 2012.

The medical group says that the food chain company is sending the wrong message in a country that could worsen obesity epidemic. Reports say that around one-quarter of Britons are obese and it could jump to half by 2030.

“It’s very sad that an event that celebrates the very best of athletic achievements should be sponsored by companies contributing to the obesity problem and unhealthy habits,” Terence Stephenson, a spokesman for the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges said as quoted in a report.

McDonald’s being the top-tier sponsor of the 2012 London Olympics will be the only restaurant allowed to sell brand-name food in the Olympic Park and Athlete’s Village. On the other hand, Coca-Cola got the exclusive rights to sell non-alcoholic drinks at the Olympic venues which is also unhealthy according to the medical group.

In response to the “unhealthy” issue, McDonald’s is pushing a fitness campaign to help children stay healthy. The food chain company will provide “activity toys” in their Happy Meals which will count the number of jumps and steps a child makes. It was said that the new campaign aims to keep kids on the go and work off the cheeseburger they just ate.

Meanwhile, London Olympic organizers said that “sponsors provide a huge amount of the funding required to stage the games” and have defended their decision to accept McDonald’s sponsorship as a business deal.
