World-renowned Filipino singer-actress Lea Salonga was appointed as UN Goodwill Ambassador against world hunger, during the celebration of World Food Day 2010 last Friday.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) announced Philippines’ pride Lea Salonga as among the four as UN Goodwill Ambassadors to help in the global fight against hunger.

This was announced by FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf, on the 38th year of World Food Day, in which this year’s theme is ‘United Against Hunger’.

The other three appointed UN Goodwill Ambassadors were Canadian singer Céline Dion, Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon and Italian actor Raoul Bova.

According to FAO on their website, the World Food Day 2010 ceremony was held in Rome, in which Celine Dion was not present but did accept the honor through a video address.

The newly appointed FAO Goodwill Ambassadors are said to be committing themselves personally and professionally to address the universal humanitarian goals as part of the mission of FAO, which is to build a food-secure world for present and future generations.

Meanwhile, FAO added that Lea Salonga also accepted to act as an advocate for the Youth and the United Nations Global Alliance initiative.
