As noted at US news sites that day, the Willie Nelson monument, which was donated by non-profit organization Capitol Area Statues Inc., was unveiled coincided with the so-called National Weed Day (or 420), the day of protest for the legalization of märijuänä.

According to reports, event organizers noted the date was not intentional because Nelson was also set to perform a show for Johnny Cash on the same night, with the ‘Red Headed Stranger’ singer notably known for being an advocate for the said cause.

“We’re trying to capture the universal sense of Willie, the timeless Willie and we chose an era in the mid 80’s as a basic starting point but he’s always had kind of an old soul about him so I think we did that. I think we were successful,” Clete Shields, the sculptor, was quoted as saying.

Mr. Shields added that the 8-foot-tall bronze statute of Willie Nelson holding his guitar has been in the works for about three years, with city officials saying that helped give Austin the reputation of the live music capital of the world.

Nelson, 78, have won 10 Grammy Awards, eight CMA Awards, among others in his entire career, and reportedly sold more than 40 million copies of his 150 albums; has also appeared in 30 Hollywood films and co-authored several books as well.

Back in the mid-80s, Willie Nelson formed the country supergroup The Highwaymen along with Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, who was also present during the said unveiling of his monument and congratulated him.
