West Point Museum Exhibits Civil War Collections

The West Point Museum, in Highland Falls, New York, has opened an exhibit of Civil War memorabilia, according to reports by several international news sites on Monday, May 16, 2011.

The museum exhibit, in the Foyer Gallery, will be featuring an extensive US Military Academy collection of artifacts and artwork.

The Civil War collection will be on display starting Monday at the main entrance of the museum.

Among the collections on display is the September 1862 painting of the, Battle of Antietam, painted by Julian A. Scott, a war drummer boy and recipient of the Medal of Honor.

Other Civil War collections in the exhibit includes a small fragment of the Fort Sumter flag that flew in April 1861 and the bugle used after the surrender in Appomattox of General Robert E. Lee to fellow West Point alumni Ulysses S. Grant.
