Vegemite has been a surprised topic during a visit by US President Barack Obama and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard in a high school class in Virginia.

One high school student asked PM Gillard: “My family and I have been wondering for a little while: what is Vegemite?” The two world leaders readily answered the inquiry by describing Australia‘s well known spread.

President Obama initially describe Vegemite as “horrible.” He added that “it’s like a quasi-vegetable-byproduct paste that you smear on your toast for breakfast. Sounds good, doesn’t it?”

PM Gillard further explained that the Australian paste is “a byproduct of making beer, apparently … It’s a yeast paste … It’s black and it’s quite salty. The beginner’s error with Vegemite is to put too much on a piece of bread or a piece of toast.”

According to reports, PM Gillard earlier presented an AFL football to US President Obama during their initial meeting in the White House.
