Vandenberg Rocket Delta 4-Heavy launched in California West Coast

Vandenberg rocket, the largest unmanned Delta 4-Heavy American rocket currently in use, was launched in the California West Coast on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at around 1:10p.m. PST, according to international news sites.

The rocket is carrying NROL-49, a new spy satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office, which is on a classified mission.

The Vanderberg Delta 4-Heavy rocket stands at 235 feet (72 meters) in height, and can be compared to a 23-story building. The launched is the fifth flight for the Delta 4-Heavy rocket since its debut in 2004.

Previous launches of Delta 4 was in Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Reports say that the Vandenberg rocket launch is the largest in the West Coast since Titan 4B rocket.
