USA versus Russia

The USA basketball team advanced to the Semi-Finals of the 2010 FIBA World Championship with a rousing win over Russia. The Americans showed its might with their speed and athleticism over the Russians’ physical and deliberate game, to win 89-79. Kevin Durant led the way for Team USA as he scored 33 points on 11-of-19 field goals and took 8-of-9 from the charity line.

Team USA had a hard time early in the game as they were beaten by the Russians with its pick-and-roll and off-ball screens. The NBA led Team USA also gave up nine offensive rebounds in the first half of the game. The Americans also find it difficult to break the Russian‘s matchup zone. However, Team USA got its acts together in the second half to finally dispose off the gritty Russians. The Americans have minimized their turnover again in this game while playing at a very fast pace. Team USA applied the same suffocating defense it used when they beat Angola in the Round-of-16, thus, making it difficult for Russia‘s point guards to setup its big men, New York Knicks center Timofey Mozgov and starting center Sasha Kaun. It was a foul plagued game as the USA team got to the charity line 28 times, a new record in the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

At the end of the game, Russian head coach David Blatt had all praises for Kevin Durant. “He made plays. And that’s the definition of a great player, a guy who can make plays when he’s being pressed, when he’s being guarded,” Blatt said. It’s getting clearer now that Team USA‘s head coach Mike Krzyzewski‘s game plan is speed, athleticism and Kevin Durant.

The Americans will now face Lithuania in the Semi-Final round on Saturday, September 11, 2010 (noon ET, ESPN Classic). This 2010 FIBA World Championship updates was taken from Picture on this article was taken from
