On July 26, 2011, the Postal Service has announced through US national news of its plan to shut down post offices because of the $7 billion debt in operating them.

The final decision though is expected late this year before the first closures would begin. About 3,700 post offices would be affected; majority of them in the rural areas, and thousands would lose their jobs in the process.

August 18 news reports disclosed that local residents in some of the affected post offices are reluctant to let go of something that has been part of their community. The US Postal Service (USPS) though says that the revenue is not enough to cover the cost of maintaining them.

The alternative plan by the Postal Service is to create village post offices as parts of grocery stores, malls or gas stations to serve the needs of the community.

The complete list of the US post offices, which are due for closure can be found at this expanded list provided by the USPS.
