The US Open 2012 golf tournament leaderboard had another shake-up in the final round. Webb Simpson ended up beating Michael Thompson and Graeme McDowell by one stroke to win the 2012 US Open on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California, according to a published report at USOpen.com.

The 26-year-old Simpson, from Charlotte, N.C., claimed the title after playing in just his second US Open golf tournament. He placed tied for 14th in last year. The 2012 US Open is Simpson‘s first major championship and third professional victory, winning twice in the 2011 PGA Tour.

Simpson finished with a 72-hole total of 1-over 281 on the 7,170-yard Lake Course. He reportedly played the final 13 holes in four under par, including three consecutive birdies from No. 6.

In an interview with NBC, Simpson described his final round as “a cool day.” Simpson said that he “had peace [of mind] all day. I knew it was a tough golf course. I had to go out and do as well as I could. I probably prayed more the last three holes than I’ve ever done in my life. It helped me stay calm and get in with 2‑under [68].”

Jim Furyk, who began the final round with a share of the lead with McDowell at 1-under 209, ended up tied for fourth and four strokes ahead of Simpson. McDowell and Thompson were tied for second place.
