As noted at US news sites on Thursday, September 1, 2011, Gael Monfils made the trick shot that day, which also happens to be his 25th birthday, during a match against Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Monfils, the highest-ranked French tennis player as of 2011, was caught out of position during the first set of their second round, which was held at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City.

Apparently, Ferrero‘s shot went directly to Monfils and the latter jumped and made a behind the back shot to return the ball to his opponent, with the crowd screaming wild after the shot.

Ferrero, 31, made an overhead slam in return but the point went to Monfils. However, the former complained and the call was reversed after replay showed that the ball actually hit the line.

According to reports, the physical tennis match lasted nearly five hours and Ferrero, former world’s rank no. 1 tennis player back in 2003, beat Monfils; 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-7 (5), 6-4 and 6-4.
