The so-called ‘US Marines Nazi flag‘ posing incident in Afghanistan back in September 2010, as shown in the photo below, is now being demanded for an investigation after the soldiers involved were not given any disciplinary action.

According to a press release by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) on Thursday, February 9, 2012, the United States Military should condemn the “shameful display” and punish all those involved.

Apparently, MRFF is referring to the photo of ten Marine Corps Scout Snipers from the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion in Helmand Province posing behind an American flag and another flag bearing “SS” in the shape of jagged lightning bolts that is being believed to be similar with the Nazi symbol.

“The fact that United States service personnel were caught proudly posing with the emblem of the Nazi SS, which symbolizes the vile ideology of Hitlerian fascism, sends a menacing signal to religious minorities within the US Armed Forces.” MRFF Founder & President Michael “Mikey” Weinstein wrote on a letter, posted at MilitaryReligiousFreedom.org.

“The Military Religious Freedom Foundation immediately calls for the leadership of the United States Military to condemn this stomach-turning display without equivocation or delay and severely punish all of those responsible.” Weinstein added.

As noted at CNN also on Thursday, the ‘US Marines Nazi flag‘ photo, which was said to have been originally posted at Knight’s Armament Blog last May 2011, immediately went viral and received a lot of criticisms that reached the knowledge of the US Marine Corps in November.

“Those involved acknowledged that the symbol could be misinterpreted and is not in keeping with our Marine Corps ethos and values,” US Marine Corps spokesman Lt. Col. Stewart Upton was quoted in a statement.

“They didn’t know what the ‘SS‘ stood for. They had no idea it actually connected them to a Nazi-related organization.” Master Gunnery Sergeant Mark Oliva, a spokesman for the 1st Marine Expedionary Force, was quoted at Bloomberg, noting that the SS in that flag means Scout Sniper and not the Nazi SS (Schutzstaffel), which is the elite paramilitary force of Adolf Hitler‘s party.
