The flag of the Republic of the Philippines was displayed upside down during the 2nd Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) – US Leaders’ Meeting in New York last weekend. When the Philippine flag is displayed this way (red on top, and blue on the bottom), it indicates that the Philippine nation is under a state of war. US Embassy Spokesperson Rebecca Thompson issued a statement that this Inverted Philippine Flag incident was an “honest mistake“.

The official statement was posted in the Gov.PH Official Gazette site and it reads as:

Statement of Rebecca Thompson, spokesperson of the US Embassy, on the inverted Philippine flag on display during the 2nd ASEAN-US Leader’s Meeting

[September 26, 2010]

This was an honest mistake. The U.S. treasures its close relationship and close partnership with the Philippines which were demonstrated this past week during President Aquino’s trip to the U.S., with the signing of the MCC Compact, the US-ASEAN meeting, and the meeting of our two Presidents that followed it.

According to GMANEWs.tv report, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda pointed out that the Philippine Government was satisfied with the explanation given by the US Embassy and will not demand for further apology from the United States.
