According to Apple on their official website on Friday, November 11, 2011, the unlocked iPhone 4S will cost $649 for the 16GB model, $749 for the 32GB model and $849 for the 64GB model. Each of them is $450 more expensive than the carrier-locked versions.

“If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone is the best choice.” Apple said on its report, noting that the unlocked iPhone 4S will not work with CDMA-based carriers such as Sprint or Verizon Wireless.

These unlocked iPhones can be activated and used on the supported GSM wireless network such as AT&T in the US. It has no micro-SIM card, which means buyers will need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide. After purchased online, Apple said they will be shipped within 1-2 weeks without any cost in shipment.

Back in October, these contract-free iPhones were promised by Apple right after its launch, in which 9 to 5 Mac reported that time that it was made available in selected Apple stores in the US.

Meanwhile, this recent announcement from Apple comes along with the newly released iOS 5.0.1, which was said to be solving the battery charge problem of iOS devices such as iPhone 4S. However, some users are still complaining via the Apple Support forum, saying that it did not really solve the battery life issue.
