Manila, Philippines – A 23-year old worker of Ultra Mega Supermarket was caught allegedly stealing a bottle of pineapple juice drink worth P21.30 (approx. $0.50) on Friday night and was later sent to jail, according to Inquirer on Saturday.

According to the report, a Ultra Mega Supermarket merchandiser named Melchor Taniega of Tondo, Manila was about to leave the grocery store when a security guard discovered a bottled pineapple juice in his possession.

Police told the news that the incident happened at around 7:25 p.m. at the Ultra Mega Supermarket branch on A. Rivera Street in Tondo, while the grocery’s security guards are doing their checking routine on employees after their working hours.

The suspect was later turned over the Manila Police District station in Tondo, and will be charged for qualified theft at the prosecutor’s office.

Meanwhile, MPD Station 2 desk officer Senior Police Officer 3 Lani Hardin told the news that the supermarket management wishes to pursue the case against their employee.

“The supermarket manager told me that if Taniega had not been their employee, they would have just made him pay 10 times the worth of the product.” Hardin said, adding that company said the low price of product stolen does not matter, but rather the betrayal of trust.
