Despite the rains, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), with its Olympic-inspired theme, officially unfurled its 74th season with a bang at the Marikina Sports Center, Saturday July 9, as reported by several local news sites, July 10, 2011.

Athletes of the 8 UAAP schools, carrying color-coded umbrellas, apparently paraded around the sports complex’s oval track.

First to march, as reports attest, were athletes from the University of the Philippines (UP), followed by National University (NU), and perennial over-all champion University of Sto. Tomas (UST).

Marching next were athletes from the Far Eastern University (FEU), University of the East (UE), Adamson University, and De La Salle University (DLSU).

The last to parade were representatives of host school Ateneo de Manila University.

Olsen Racela, former Ateneo standout and retired Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) star, carried the UAAP flame in a torch that travelled from one member school to the other before finally making it to Katipunan and eventually in a giant cauldron at the heart of the Marikina Sports Park.

Gracing the opening ceremonies were Season 74 president Ricky Palou, secretary treasurer Emmanuel Fernandez, Ateneo president Rev. Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin, S.J., the entire UAAP board and top officials from the 8 member schools.

Rev. Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin,  S.J. was reportedly quoted in his opening remark saying, “Rain or shine you are here, let us congratulate ourselves. The theme of the games says it all. This is more than just a simple tournament. This is not just about games. This is not just about strength and physical prowess but also heart,” underscoring this season’s theme “All Out, All Heart”.

“We know that the greatest enemy we face is not our foe, not our opponent in the field but someone from within: our very selves. And so it is our hope and prayers that these games will make us stronger and braver to face our enemies, especially those from within,” Fr. Villarin added.

Ateneo, as related reports reveal, closed out the program with a dance performance to the tune of Spongecola’s “Puso”, the theme song of Season 70.

Colorful umbrellas fill the Marikina Sports Park as participants and athletes of the UAAP Season 74 attend the formal opening.
