Typhoon Quiel was located by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) over the West Philippine Sea at 290 km West of Baguio City according to the latest weather update by the weather bureau on its official website as of 11 a.m. today, October 2, 2011.

PAGASA weather forecast indicates Typhoon Quiel to be moving away from the country and maybe at 500 km West Northwest of Baguio City by Monday evening.

Typhoon Quiel is reportedly moving west at 20 kph with a maximum strength of 130 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph.

Areas under Public warning storm signal number 1 that may experience winds from 45-60 kph includes Ilocos Sur, La Union, Zambales, and Pangasinan. Residents in low lying and mountainous areas are being alerted for possible flashfloods and landslides and those in coastal areas may experience big waves or storm surges due to Typhoon Quiel.

Due to Typhoon Quiel, the Southwest Monsoon is enhanced and brings scattered to widespread rainfall about 15-25 mm per hour in the Western area of Southern Luzon.

The next PAGASA weather bulletin will be issued by the weather bureau at 5 p.m. today.
