Tropical Storm Arlene Claims 17 Lives in Mexico

Tropical Storm Arlene claimed the lives of at least 17 people in Mexico, with thousands others affected since Thursday, international news sites reported on Monday, July 4, 2011.

CNN reported that the dead includes five from Hidalgo, two in Guerrero, two from the state of Tamaulipas, three in San Luis Potosi and five from Veracruz. The age of the victims ranged from 12 to 65 years old.

According to Juan Carlos Orantes, head of Mexico‘s civil protection agency, the death toll was expected to grow as more casualties are being reported in the state of Oaxaca.

Tropical Storm Arlene was said to be the first named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season.
