According to international news sites on Monday, May 23, Toyota Motors Corp. and Inc. had a press conference in Tokyo that day and announced the news.

“Social networking services are transforming human interaction and modes of communication,” Toyota President Akio Toyoda was quoted as saying in the press conference.

“The automobile needs to evolve in step with that transformation.” Toyoda added, noting that he has been telling Toyota to make ever-better cars.

Toyota Motors Corp. was said to be investing 442 million yen ($5.4 million) for this private social network for Toyota cars and owners, particularly for the electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids which are for release next year.

Apparently, Toyota Friend will be made exclusively for Toyota car owners, who can connect with each other including dealers and the car manufacturer, and will also have a Twitter-like chat service.

In addition, users can also view documents and join discussion groups and drivers will be notified if the battery of their vehicles is already running low.

Toyota Friend, which will be available via smartphones and tablet computers, as Microsoft and Toyota have announced last month about providing Internet-based services to Toyota cars.
