Tour de France 2011: Belgian Philippe Gilbert Wins First Stage to Get Yellow Jersey

Philippe Gilbert has won the first stage of the Tour de France 2011 to get the yellow jersey in  Les Herbiers. According to international sports news, July 2, 2011, Gilbert displayed “cool-headedness under pressure,” to win amidst the crashes that had happened during the race.

Cadel Evans of Australia came in second, while Thor Hushovd of Norway, third. Gilbert finished three seconds ahead of Evans. Evans, 34, had finished 2nd in the 2007 and 2008 Tour   de France. Hushovd, 33, who is the 2010 world road champion, finished six seconds behind   Gilbert.

Reportedly, Philippe Gilbert, 28, was the first Belgian to win in a single year all the three Ardennes classics, which are challenging cycling races, held in Ardennes, Belgium and Limburg, Netherlands. Now, his win in the first stage of the Tour de France 2011 is another great success in his cycling career.
