Indonesian official have raised a red alert status as Mount Merapi begins to erupt. One of the most volatile volcano, Mount Merapi is feared to cause a lot of damage. According to Indonesian volcanologist, the volcano may create a powerful eruption as the pressure at the bottom of the lava dome increases.

As the volcano starts to blow hot ash and hurl burning rocks into the air, thousands of residents within the volcano slopes were evacuated.

Officials will also need to implement an evacuation of residents within the 10-mile radius of the volcano. This means that about 13,000 people will still be evacuated.

According to the head of the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Surono, they “heard three explosions around 1800 (1100GMT) spewing volcanic material as high as 1.5km (one mile) and sending heat clouds down the slopes.” He added that the new eruption is more powerful than the previous eruption of the volcano in 2006.
