Pompeii, Italy – The so-called House of the Gladiators in Pompeii collapsed last Saturday, international news sites reported. The structure was estimated to be 2,000 years old. It is believed that this was the place where gladiators gathered and trained before going into battle in the nearby amphitheatre.

Some of the frescos on the house’s lower walls might have survived, Culture Minister Sandro Bondi said. Officials were “trying to preserve the last fragments,” Antonio Varone, director of excavations at the site was quoted saying.

Some people said that the recent heavy rains on the site might have made the structure unstable.

The government of Italy is accused of neglect and mismanagement by commentators, archaelogists and some opposition politician. A La Stampa newspaper had a headline: “Pompeii – the collapse of shame,” condemning the incident.

Some commentators said that the site should be removed from the state control because the incident showed that the government is not capable of protecting it.
