Tamale Recall: California Firm Recalls 144,633 Tamale Products Due To Mislabeling And An Undeclared Allergen

Tamale products has been recalled by Homestead Pasta Company in San Francisco, California because they contain an undeclared allergen, whey, which is not noted on the label and is known a dairy allergen.

In a press release issued by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on Thursday, approximately 144,633 pounds of frozen meat and poultry tamale products were recalled.

Reports said that the products were produced from April 2010 until January 2011. It was distributed for retail sales in California, Oregon and Washington and for institutional use in California. Its individual packages bear the establishment number “P-4994” or “EST. 4994” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The problem was said to be discovered by FSIS during a label review at the establishment.

The products affected by the recall are the following:

  • 8.5-lb. cases of “Garibaldi BEEF TAMALE” with each case containing 12 individual 11 oz. packages.
  • 8.5-lb. cases of “Garibaldi TURKEY TAMALE” with each case containing 12 individual 11 oz. packages.
  • 10.5-lb. cases of “Golden West Traditional BEEF TAMALE With Sauce in Husk” with each case containing 12 individual 14 oz. packages.
  • 10.5-lb. cases of “Golden West Traditional TURKEY TAMALE With Sauce in Husk” with each case containing 12 individual 14 oz. packages.
  • 18-lb. cases of “Casper HOMESTEAD PASTA COMPANY Beef Tamale” with each case containing 36 individual 8 oz. packages.
  • 18-lb. cases of “Casper HOMESTEAD PASTA COMPANY Chicken Tamale” with each case containing 36 individual 8 oz. packages.

Based on the press release of FSIS, the recall was considered to be in Class 1 with a high health risk classification. At the moment, FSIS and the company have not received any reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
