According to local news sites on Sunday, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III (PNoy) led the unveiling of Rizal‘s tallest statue in Calamba, Laguna, the birthplace of Dr. Jose Rizal.

As reported earlier, the tallest Jose Rizal monument measures 22 feet tall, representing the 22 different languages known by Rizal including English, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian and Spanish.

The tallest Rizal statue, which was sculptured by Jonas Roces, stands in front of the new Calamba City Hall, and broke the record of the Rizal monument in Nueva Vizcaya, which is only 18.6 feet tall.

The construction of Rizal’s tallest monument was made possible through the coordination between the Calamba local government and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), and is only among the activities in celebrating Rizal’s 150th birthday.

Jose Rizal is the Philippines’ national hero and was known for his courage to fight the Spanish government particularly through his novels “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibustersmo“.

Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 and was executed via firing squad by the Spanish Army on December 30, 1896 in Bagumbayan, now known as Rizal Park or Luneta.
