Swimmers Ride Dying Whale in Florida Beach

Swimmers ride a dying whale at the Pompano beach in South Florida on Sunday, December 16, 2012. Reports say that two swimmers were photographed while they alternately ride the sick sperm whale.

The 35-foot-long whale later died off the coast of an Atlantic beach.

As of posting, Florida officials are still investigating the reported whale ride by the beachgoers.

Investigators are using the photos taken by a woman witness that took the picture of the two beachgoers while she was at a nearby condo.

Blair Mase, NOAA‘s southeast marine mammal stranding coordinator explained that under the Marine Mammal Protection act, the beachgoers actions were illegal.

Initial examination of the dead whale reportedly did not show anything unusual. Mase said that further investigation by the wildlife officials was only triggered by the whale-riding report and solidified by the images by the woman witness.
