According to Motor Trend on its official website on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, Range Rover Evoque was chosen as the SUV of the Year 2012 and beat nine other finalists.

Among this year’s top contenders include BMW X3, Dodge Durango, Dodge Journey, Ford Explorer, Jeep Wrangler, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Mini Cooper Countryman, Saab 9-4x, and Volkswagen Touareg.

Land Rover has a worldwide hit on its hands with the Range Rover Evoque.” Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Angus McKenzie was quoted in a statement.

“With its dramatic styling, refined on-road manners, and impressive off-road ability, the Evoque sets the benchmark for the fast-growing compact luxury SUV class,” McKenzie added.

As noted in the report, the criteria include Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Intended Function, Efficiency, Safety, and Value, with Porsche Cayenne winning the title last year.

For the advancement in design, Motor Trend noted that Evoque drew more comments than any other contender, from its big wheels, windshield, interior, and roofline. Motor Trend editors were notably impressed with the vehicle’s stylish layout, roominess, and high-quality materials.

The Evoque is also being considered as the most efficient Land Rover ever built, with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and full torque available at 1750 rpm. The vehicle also claims a 20-percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared with larger engines with the same power output.

The Evoque was also applauded by its application of different standard safety equipment. Among them are the seven airbags a knee airbag for the driver; built-in computer programs and traction control systems, as well as rain-sensing wipers, automatic and adaptive headlights, and an optional five-camera.

On the other hand, the base price of the Range Rover Evoque, which is between $43,995 and $52,895, was said to be reasonable although others might look it as expensive for a compact, four-cylinder SUV based on the significantly cheaper LR2.

Apparently, Evoque‘s competitors were noted to be having a lower starting prices but Motor Trend said they believe its value lies in its content, and also named it as 2012 Sport/Utility of the Year.
