According to international news sites, a section of cable derailed about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday and five two-passenger chairs fell, with at least three of them hitting the ground 30 feet below.

The eight injured riders were taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and two of them were taken late Tuesday to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening, according to Brad Larsen, vice-president of sales and marketing at Sugarloaf.

Reports said that Sugarloaf‘s staff is doing a daily inspection as part of the resort’s daily safety checks and that the cause of the accident is still unclear whether it was a wind-related or mechanical.

Meanwhile, Sugarloaf officials said that the lift just recently passed an annual inspection by the state Board of Elevator and Tramway Safety in October.
