The giant Stratolaunch plane, partly airplane and partly spaceship, is reportedly ready for commercial flight by 2016. The giant machine is a joint project by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, PayPal and Tesla founder Elon Musk, and aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan, according to reports by several international news sites on Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Reports say that the Stratolaunch spaceship will be able to transport tourists in space without using the traditional launch pad for liftoff. The giant plane will fly to a certain elevation and will then be propelled into space by its rocket part.

Stratolaunch has a wingspan of 385 feet and weighs about 1.2 million pounds. It is reportedly powered by six fuel efficient 747 engines, that eliminated the need for rocket fuel usually used to propel rockets from the ground.
