Sprint announced that newly activated smartphones starting January 30 will be charged an additional of $10 a month, in which analysts claims to be unavoidable due to high amount of smartphones being used.

Reports added that other carriers might also ask for additional charges from customers if they have not done so recently, as predicted by analysts.

As mentioned by Sprint in news reports, the additional charge will be used to shoulder the expenses to maintain its network.

“Data is a commodity and commodity prices will increase with increased demand,” said Jack Gold of J. Gold Associates told the news.

“It’s a lot like the airlines. Filling the seats means you can raise fares.” Mr. Gold added.

Currently, Sprint charges $69.99 monthly, which means that monthly charge will be $79.99 starting January 30, for unlimited mobile talk time and data.

Sprint, known as the third largest carrier in the US, is currently competing with Verizon and AT&T; in which the latter announced last year that unlimited data plans for new customers is not available anymore.
