Sony to give free online games as “Welcome Back” to PlayStation and Qriocity customers

Sony PlayStation is set to give free online games as a “Welcome Back” to PlayStation and Qriocity customers, as well as to PSP owners, after the PlayStation Network started to be back online on Sunday.

As announced by Sony at PlayStation blog on Monday, May 16, 2011, a “Welcome Back” appreciation program was developed for their customers in North America (US and Canada).

“We developed the program as an expression of our gratitude for your patience, support and continued loyalty during the service outage.” Sony‘s Corporate Communications & Social Media Senior Director Patrick Seybold wrote on the blog post.

“From all of us at PlayStation, thank you and welcome back!” Seybold added, noting that the free online games will be available for 30 days once the services of PlayStation and Qriocity will be fully restored.

As noted at, the games which will be made available for free and can be kept forever are: Dead Nation, inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet, Super Stardust HD and Wipeout HD + Fury.

On the other hand, Sony said that PSP owners will be eligible to download two free games which will be available for 30 days and can also be kept forever.

Among the games that can be downloaded for free are LittleBigPlanet (PSP), ModNation Racers, Pursuit Force and Killzone Liberation.

Other freebies that Sony offers to PSP owners include 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PlayStation Plus subscribers, while current PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional free subscription for 60 days.

In addition, there will be a selection of “On Us” rental movie titles (titles to be announced later) which will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend to customers where Video Service is available.

For existing Music Unlimited Premium/Basic members, there will be additional 30 days + time lost, as PlayStation Home will also be offering 100 free virtual items.

Lastly, Sony said that there will be additional free content which is for release soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and for the exclusive game Ooblag’s Alien Casino.

For PlayStation Network users in other places including Asia, Europe and Latin America, Sony said they are doing their best to restore the services fully as a separate “Welcome Back” program for them is also being developed.
