Snow tires has become a necessity these days for car owners in the US Northeast area due to frequent snowfall that causes slippery grounds. The post-Christmas blizzard that paralyzed majority of the Northeast and its airports started to make residents feel the importance of snow tires.

All major tire manufacturers including Bridgestone, Cooper, Firestone, Goodyear, Hankook, Michelin and Pirelli are producing snow tires. These specially made tires uses a special rubber formula to remain flexible and still get a good grip on the ground even at low temperatures. The tread pattern of the tires are designed to compact and grip snow to avoid sliding on slippery grounds. Snow tires can be used all throughout the year, however, they easily wear off during hot weather.

Less than two weeks after the post-Christmas blizzard, snowfall will start again, according to the Natioanal Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service on Friday, January 7, 2011. The weather forecast expects less than 6 inches (15 centimeters) of snow in New York. At this early, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his administration are reportedly setting up an emergency-response team to avoid any political backlash. The preparations include the tracking devices on 50 sanitation trucks in Brooklyn.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg had this to say on New York’s preparations:

I realize there were problems with the city’s snow-cleaning efforts last week. We want to assure all New Yorkers that we are doing everything in our power to make sure we don’t experience those kinds of problems again.

With the upcoming snow fall, it is really worth investing on snow tires to avoid any accident that may in turn be more expensive.
