A small plane crashes reportedly crashed after takeoff when it hit a pickup truck running along the runway on Friday, November 16, 2012. The The collision between the plane and the truck reportedly sent flames 10 to 20 feet in the air.
The north bound small plane, a Cessna 172, was reportedly on its way to Knox County Regional Airport.
Initial reports by authorities, the truck was authorized to be on the airport grounds at that time because it was trying to pick up another pilot.
According to Knox County Chief Deputy Sheriff Tim Carroll the plane continued to climb after hitting the truck and eventually went down and burst in flames into a 200 to 300 yards of thick woods.
Reports say that about three individuals, one Maine resident and two from outside the state, lost their lives in the incident.
Airport manager Jeff Northgraves explained that investigation will take awhile since identification numbers of the plane was been burned off. Northgraves said that they “don’t have verification that this aircraft is what we think it is.” The state medical examiner will do the examination to identify the burned victims.
The Federal Aviation Administration and officials from the National Transportation Safety Board will start the investigation on the incident by Saturday, November 17.
