SkyWheel, considered the tallest Ferris wheel in the Eastern United States with a height of 200-foot, opened on Friday, May 20, 2011 near the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, according to reports by several international news sites.

The $12 million Ferris wheel, with a million LED lights and 42 air-conditioned gondolas, is overlooking the shore of the Myrtle Beach, heart of South Carolina‘s $18.4 billion tourism industry. SkyWheel was developed by Koch Development and Pacific Development.

Influx of local and international visitors are expected in the center of downtown Myrtle Beach with the opening of SkyWheel.

After losing the ocean front Pavilion amusement park in 2005, a 1.2-mile ocean front boardwalk was opened in 2010.

SkyWheel riders will experience a 12-minute spin above and overlooking the Myrtle beach. Every night, there will be a computerized light show for additional entertainment.

Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes expects that SkyWheel will “be an icon for our city and I think we’re going to be able to use it as a tremendous commercial tool.”

According to David Busker, president of Koch Development, “Myrtle Beach was the right audience for the attraction.” He added that “Niagara Falls has a similar profile to Myrtle Beach, 14 million visitors, natural attractions — they have the falls and we have the beach — and they have been very successful.”

SkyWheel is 12 feet less than the Texas State Fair Ferris Wheel in Dallas, considered as the tallest Ferris wheel in the US and is smaller than the world’s first Ferris wheel, measuring 264-foot, built in World’s Fair Chicago in 1893.

According to Norman Anderson, of Raleigh, N.C., a retired North Carolina State University professor, the Singapore Flyer is still the world’s tallest Ferris wheel at 541-foot.
