A Skyway accident in Manila claimed the lives of over 20 individuals at around 5 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2013. (WATCH the News Video here.)
According to witnesses, an overspeeding Don Mariano Transit Corp. bus fell off the Skyway in the area of Barangay Marcelo Green, Parañaque City along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx).
The public utility bus, with plate number UVC 916 bound for Pacita Complex, was running on the elevated part of the Skyway and plunged into the west service road of the southbound lane of SLEx. It hit a van, with plate number ULX 874, running below the Skyway.
Two passengers of the van was killed in the incident.
The Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group said 18 people died in the freak accident. Sixteen others, including bus driver Carmelo Calatcat, were injured.
A Philippine Red Cross report, however, said as many as 22 people died when the bus fell off the elevated highway.
The incident caused heavy traffic along SLEx and also affected flow of vehicles along Epifanio delo Santos Avenue (EDSA).
