A sinkhole that swallows a pond, reportedly drained its water overnight in Newcastle, California on Sunday, March 17, 2013. The sinkhole is the third US incident in less than a month in two states.
The area owner, Mark Korb, noticed the disappearance of his man-made pond when he woke up in the morning. In an interview with NBC News, Korb described the sinkhole that “looks like the moon.”
Based on experience, it took Korb one week to completely drain his pond manually. However, he estimated that the massive sinkhole could have taken “probably four to five hours for this whole area to drain.”
Earlier this month, two sinkholes were discovered in the Florida area. The first sinkhole reportedly swallowed a man sleeping on his bed in a Tampa home. The victim was 37-year-old Jeff Bush, an employee of the Florida Department Of Transportation.
A second sinkhole reportedly measured with a circumference of about 12-feet, 3 feet deep around the edge and about 5 feet deep in the center was found in between two homes in Seffner.
