Under the mantra “set your girls free,” thousands of women across the world went bra-less on October 13 to celebrate the National No Bra Day for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to Fox News, the National No Bra Day is an annual holiday started on 2011. Breast cancer survivors and supporters are using social media such as Facebook and Twitter to encourage women not to wear bra for a day to raise awareness and support breast cancer survivors.

According to News Max, “No Bra Day” only evolved into a full-on breast cancer awareness movement, but it actually started with no clear purpose on 2011.

About 12.3 % of women will get breast cancer at some point in their lifetime based on 2009-2011 data from the National Cancer Institute, Fox News reported.

Fox News added that no current research directly links wearing a bra to higher breast cancer risk.
