Serena Williams Not Playing On US Open

Due to her foot injury, Serena Williams will not be playing on the upcoming US Open, saying she is still recovering from the surgery.

Serena WilliamsWilliams said that missing the tournament is “one of the most devastating moments of my career.”

The 28-year-old American tennis player was reportedly hurt by a broken glass at a restaurant while she was in Munich after winning her 4th Wimbledon singles title last July 3. She had her surgery last July 15.

US Open Tournament Director Jim Curley released the following statement regarding Williams’ withdrawal:

“We regret that Serena Williams is unable to play the US Open and wish her a speedy recovery. She will be missed, but the tournament is about the competition and the players on the court. This year’s US Open will be a memorable event, as it has been every year.”

The US Open is scheduled on August 30 to September 12, 2010.
