As noted on local news sites that day, Senator Migz Zubiri announced his resignation during his privilege speech at the Senate Plenary hall, whose victory is being questioned via the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET).

“Without admitting any fault and with my vehement denial of the alleged electoral fraud hurled against me, I am submitting my resignation as a duly elected Senator of the Republic of the Philippines in the election for which I am falsely accused without mercy and compassion,” Zubiri said in his speech.

“I have seen and felt the suffering of my family, and from the burrows of my conscience, I could not allow this to happen, let alone to be tolerated.” Zubiri added.

“I am resigning not because I wish to evade the decision of the Senate Electoral Tribunal.” Zubiri clarified, as he ranked 12th and final slot during the 2007 election with 11,005,866 votes.

Apparently, Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, who ranked 13th and had 10,987,347 votes, has been contesting against the proclamation of Zubiri, who came from a political clan from Bukidnon.

Meanwhile, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, who has yet to accept Zubiri‘s resignation said that he will study his resignation and will announce his decision in due time.
