As reported at Life’s Little Mysteries, the alleged sea creature was washed away at the Manhattan side of the East River, which onlookers thought of it as a mutant animal.

Apparently, the so called “East River monster” is scaly as a fish, estimated to be 6 to 7 feet long, in which a photo was sent to Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation for further identification.

Later, the “sea creature” was confirmed by sea experts as a sturgeon; a bony fish which can grow up to 12 feet long and this latest discovery is only half that long.

“We could tell it was an Atlantic sturgeon right away,” Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation biologist Kim Durham told the report.

“They have bony plates all over their bodies. There’s no mistaking a sturgeon.” Durham added, who is also the rescue program director for that agency in Riverhead, New York.

Nevertheless, Durham noted that sturgeon used to be ordinary in the East River, but their population has reduced a lot over the years due to overfishing, and this latest appearance could have a sign that they are increasing again.
