According to local news on Monday night, the House of Representatives via the signature of 188 congressmen have impeached SC Chief Justice Renato Corona in just a matter of hours.

Apparently, the current Supreme Court Chief Justice, whose tenure is until 2018, is being accused of alleged graft and corruption, culpable violation of the Constitution, and betrayal of public trust.

Corona, 63, who was appointed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) on May 12, 2010, two days after the election and a month before her term expired, was impeached via 57-page impeachment complaint.

Last Monday, President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III (PNoy) hit the Supreme Court in front of SC Chief Justice Renato Corona during the 1st National Criminal Justice Summit, whom he noted as a “midnight appointee”.

Based on the House rules, a one-third vote of all the congressmen is needed to impeach a government official, which in the present case needs only 95 signatures since there are now 284 House members.

Earlier that day, House Minority Leader Edcel Lagman, a GMA ally, told ANC that he received reports from individual congressmen who were threatened to be deprived of their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) if they will not vote for the impeachment of Corona.

On the other hand, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. stressed out the Corona impeachment was decided not because PNoy ordered them but because they really wanted the Chief Justice out.

Meanwhile, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile told reports that the Corona impeachment trial will start in 2012, noting the lack of time since they will go on break starting Thursday, December 15.
