Sathya Sai Baba Died at Age 84, State To Honor Him

IndiaHindu guru Sathya Sai Baba, who was said to be worshipped as a god by millions of followers all over the world, died at the age of 84 on Sunday morning, several international news sites reported on Sunday.

According to reports, Sai Baba spent almost a month on breathing support and dialysis while struggling with multiple-organ failure. He was admitted to the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences last March 28.

Indian officials expressed sadness at his passing.

Sri Satya Sai Baba was a spiritual leader who inspired millions to lead a moral and meaningful life, even as they followed the religion of their choice,” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reportedly said in a statement. His death is “an irreparable loss to all, and the nation deeply mourns his passing away.”

Sri Satya Sai Baba has given his great self to the service of humanity,” Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy was quoted saying. “He will be remembered for ages to come by all sections of people all over the world.”

Hundreds of thousands of followers are expected to pay their last respects. A funeral with state honors is planned on Wednesday morning.
