Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich unveiled by Google, Samsung

Google and Samsung unveiled in a joint event on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 its Galaxy Nexus smartphone, a device that features the new Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’.

According to technical news sites that day, Google and Samsung announced during a press event in Hong Kong the release of Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the third Samsung Nexus smartphone.

The Google-Samsung event dubbed as ‘Samsung Unpacked: Google Edition‘ was supposed to be held last October 11 but was postponedrespect with the loss of Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Nevertheless, the event was attended by key personnel from both companies including Samsung Mobile Communications Head JK Shin; Google Mobile SVP Andy Rubin; and Android OS Director Matias Duarte.

Among the key features of Samsung Galaxy Nexus include having a 4.65-inch Super HD AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 resolution, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, NFC and a 5-megapixel rear camera.

The third-generation Samsung Nexus smartphone also features a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 1080p video recording, and its connectivity for both 4G LTE and 3G HSPA+, depending on the region.

Unlike the Nexus S, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus do not have physical hardware buttons but rather with touch buttons on the display screen. Its physical appearance also includes having a curved glass design.

Meanwhile, the new Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ includes tons of improvement from the previous version and has also a lot of enhancement and interface, with some of them listed below.

* Roboto: a new San Serif typeface and font, replacing the Droid Sans

* Face Unlock, a facial recognition service that allows users to unlock their handsets just by looking into the front-facing camera.

* Android Beam, a NFC feature that allows users to share websites, contact info, directions, YouTube, among others

* Gmail now has offline search, a two-line preview, and new action bar at the bottom, and allows users to swipe left and right between emails

* Favorites Tray, where users can stow their favorite apps, links, and folders to a new tray for quick and easy access

Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be launched in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia this coming November. No prices were revealed although Verizon is being believed to be its carrier in the US.
