Safety locks recall: Dorel Juvenile Group recalls 900,000 Push ‘N Snap cabinet locks due to child hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Thursday, March 22, 2012 a safety locks recall, involving around 900,000 Safety 1st Push N’ Snap cabinet locks, citing child safety reasons.

According to a press release at, Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG) of Columbus, Indiana is the importer of the said Safety 1st Push ‘N Snap cabinet locks, which were manufactured in China and sold online and in US retail stores.

As noted in the report, the affected products are numbered 48391 or 48422, which can be found on the back of the safety locks, and has the Safety 1st logo embossed in front; and were sold at Bed Bath & Beyond, among others, and at from January 2004 through February 2012 for between $2 and $4.

Meanwhile, CPSC noted that DJG has received 200 reports of locks that did not work effectively, including reports of damaged locks, were 140 children between the ages of 9 months and 5 years old were able to open the lock and get things from the cabinet.

The agency emphasized that there were three reported incidents where the children who opened the cabinets have swallowed or handled dishwashing detergent, window cleaner or oven cleaner, and were treated, observed and released from emergency treatment centers.

Apparently, a similar post at the official website of Dorel Juvenile Group noted that the recalled products were manufactured prior to December, 2010; and owners can visit and ask for a free replacement.

Nevertheless, DJG said they will contact all registered owners and provide them with information on how to get their free replacement cabinet lock, noting that they should not return them to the retailers.
