As noted at US news sites that day, Metta World Peace, Ron Artest‘s new name, was approved by Commissioner Matthew C. St. George in a Los Angeles Superior Court.

Artest, a Los Angeles forward, filed a court request last June to change his name to Metta World Peace, with Metta in Buddhism means “a strong wish for the welfare and happiness of others”.

Courtney Barnes, Artest‘s publicist, told reports that the 31-year old NBA player was not present during the 5-minute hearing and he was represented by his lawyer, Nahla Rajan.

“Changing my name was meant to inspire and bring youth together all around the world,” Metta World Peace was quoted on a released statement after the hearing.

“After this short delay, my tickets have been paid and I’m glad that it is now official.” Mr. World Peace added. His 8-year old daughter Diamond reportedly wants to adopt her new surname.

Metta World Peace will be joining Dancing with the Stars Season 13 and to be partnered by Peta Murgatroyd; and is being expected to talk more about his new name when the show starts on Monday, September 19.
