Ricky Martin and True Blood win GLAAD awards 2011

Latin singer Ricky Martin and Vampire TV drama series ‘True Blood’ won major GLAAD awards 2011 (22nd GLAAD Media Awards) on Saturday, March 19, 2011 in New York.

As announced of its official website on Saturday, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), which also celebrate its 25th anniversary, presented at the Marriott Marquis Times Square in New York on Saturday.

GLAAD, an anti-defamation organization and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy in the US, is now on its 22nd year in giving honors to artists, media projects and presentation that offer fair and just treatment to their community.

Martin, 39, who publicly admitted about being a homosexual on March 2010, won the Vito Russo Award, for being a role model in the gay community.

“I just want to be free. I can say, today I am free,” Ricky Martin was quoted as saying, upon receiving the award, who also thanked his parents and boyfriend.

Meanwhile, the “Ricky Martin Coming Out as a Gay Man and a New Dad” at The Oprah Winfrey Show also won as the Outstanding Talk Show Episode.

On the other hand, HBO’s Vampire TV drama series ‘True Blood’ won as Outstanding Drama Series, which was received by Denis O’Hare, the Hollywood actor who joined the show in 2010 and portrays the role of Mississippi vampire king Russell Edgington.

Other GLAAD award winners include hip-hop mogul Russel Simmons, who received the Excellence in Media award, and Joe. My. God, which won as the Outstanding Blog, a category with the first of its kind for GLAAD.

Apparently, more awards will be presented in Los Angeles on April 10, 2011 at the Westin Bonaventure, and also in San Francisco on May 14, 2011 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis.
