On his opening monologue, Ricky Gervais started with a Charlie Sheen joke and continued with more which others think nasty and tasteless. Gervais made fun of The Tourist, the movie starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. “It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional… except the characters in The Tourist,” he said.

He made jokes about the Holywood Foreign Press Association, Hugh Hefner as “the walking dead” and Cher as a senior citizen. He even poked fun on some “famous Scientologists“.

Reactions from the attendees were mixed. “I think he’s doing an excellent job,” Guy Pearce was quoted saying. “He’s been terribly nasty and horribly rude and I think he’s genius,” Andrew Garfield said.

Veteran Hollywood producer Richard D. Zanuck felt bad. “It’s one thing if it’s just the people in the room, but on a broadcast it makes you feel bad for some of the people. I know it’s what some people want, but I still feel bad,” Zanuck was quoted saying.
